Senior Estimator

POSITION SUMMARY

Develop pricing and finalize estimates at conceptual through construction stages

Primary Location: United States-Los Angeles
Other Locations: We service clients throughout the United States and have offices in New York, New Jersey and Scottsdale, AZ

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

  • Maintains a comprehensive understanding of the organizational and compliance-related components that comprise a bid and independent construction cost estimates.
  • Serves as mentor and coach to lower-level Estimators and provides counsel to experienced Estimators.
  • Accountable for developing and assisting in closing each bid and independent construction cost estimates, including assessment of risk and recommendation of improvements in cost engineering standards, procedures, methods and processes.
  • Develops and maintains strong relationships with subcontractors as well as material and equipment suppliers ensuring all quality and safety standards are met. Delegates responsibility and coordinates project activities.
  • Comprehends contract requirements for diversity compliance.

REQUIRED BACKGROUND AND SKILLS

PREVIOUS WORK EXPERIENCE AND KNOWLEDGE OBTAINED
  • Experience in preparing independent cost estimates at 35%, 65%, 95% and final for Owners.  Ability to go toe to toe with the general contractor or Construction Manager/ General Contractor (CM/GC) in reviewing their estimates, comparing theirs to ours and ensuring that there is nothing over or under estimated, including general conditions, production and labor rates and contingencies.
  • Experience with preparing independent cost estimating for local transit related clients, including LA Metro, Caltrans, LADOT, LA Water and Power and Public Works and local utility companies. Must be able to show a minimum of three major transit projects valued between $400M-$600M that include station, civil work, trackwork, systems work and MEP workthat were estimated were reconstructed while the existing station was under operations.
  • Must be able to show a minimum of three major Caltrans Major Urban Highway Bridge projects valued between $200M-$250M that were estimated and built under strict operational and closure conditions.
  • Able to perform all duties of the Senior Estimator. Knows the local Los Angeles, CA labor and construction environment. Able to engage with sponsorship for each project. Understands Costs and Market Conditions. Understands risks and rewards for the project. Communicates and listens effectively. Works well with the team.
  • The position requires experience with public contracts, familiarity with codes/ laws governing construction, and strong cost estimating technical skills directly applicable to heavy civil construction including transit, highway and public works infrastructure.
  • Must be able to work with Construction Support Services Team, including Lead Independent Cost Estimator, Project Director, Construction Manager, Lead Project Controls Manager, and Owner. Also must be able to work with the Owner's Engineer/Architect, and their CM/GC.
EDUCATION, CERTIFICATIONS, FORMAL TRAINING

15 years of experience or College Degree with 10 years of experience in heavy civil estimating in heavy civil construction including transit, highway and public works infrastructure, including independent cost estimating.

  • Candidates who reside locally in the Los Angeles, CA area are preferred.
